SCHOOL ETIQUETTE

SUSPENSION

  • St. Wendelin School has a suspension and expulsion policy designed to address more severe discipline problems.
  • Definition of Terms: Suspension:Prohibiting a pupil from attending school for a period of no more than five days, except where the pupil creates a danger to persons or property around her/him and then a suspension shall not exceed 15 days. Expulsion:Prohibiting a pupil from attending school for a period no longer than the current school year.
  • Grounds for suspension and expulsion:
  • Evidence of possession or use of narcotics, alcohol or tobacco on school grounds.
  • Willful destruction of school property.
  • Serious misconduct that interferes with the legal and personal rights of others to an education, or which presents danger to health, safety, welfare, and morals of any person.
  • Theft of personal or school property.
  • Hitting a student, or school personnel.
  • Use of abusive language to student or school personnel.
  • Any other good and sufficient grounds rendering the attendance of the student inimical to the educational process of the school which results in a disruptive influence on the educational program.
  • SHORT TERM SUSPENSION

One Day or Less

  • The principal shall attempt to reach the student's parents or legal guardian to inform them of the school's action and request that they come to school to take custody of their child. If the principal cannot reach the parents, the student must remain on school property until the close of the school day.
  • The student shall be informed of the accusation against him/her by the principal.3.A conference with parents may be required prior to re-admittance to the school.
Up to and including five days

  • Procedure is the same as in #1 in the one day suspension.
  • The student will be informed of the accusation against him/her by the principal. They will be given a copy of a letter of suspension with a copy of the "Pupil Fair Dismissal Act."
  • A certified letter will be mailed to the parents or guardians with a copy of the "Pupil Fair Dismissal Act" stating time, date, charge and specific acts that support the accusations causing the suspension. The procedure for re-admission to school will be given.
  • The school will keep a copy of the certified letter along with records showing the letter has been mailed and received by the parent or guardian.

EXPULSION

  • If the principal decides that a penalty more severe than a short term suspension is warranted, he/she must discuss matters with the pastor.
  • A meeting of the Pastor, a Board Member, Principal and other personnel deemed necessary will be held to decide whether expulsion is the only solution.
  • If expulsion is recommended, the principal will follow the Minnesota Statutes regarding this.

BUS DISCIPLINE

  • The following rules of discipline are enforced by the bus company (District 742).
  • 1st Incident Report: No action by principal; parents informed to talk to child.
  • 2nd Incident Report: Principal talks to child and reviews the rules; parents informed to talk to the child.
  • 3rd Incident Report: Three day suspension from bus riding privileges; principal talks to child; parents informed.
  • 4th Incident Report: Five day suspension from bus riding privileges; principal talks to child, parents informed.
  • 5th Incident Report: Two week suspension from bus riding privileges; principal talks to child; parents informed.

PLAYGROUND RULES

  • We will play in a Christian-like manner by not hurting other children by our words or actions.
  • Anyone may use the playground equipment during noon recess.
  • Swings are to be used in a proper manner (no pushing under the swing, no twisting around, no holding hands while swinging, and no shortening the chains). Other children should not walk in front of the swings where they could be hit.
  • Jump ropes are for jumping only, please put them away when you are done.
  • The basketball court is to be used by Grades 1-2-3 at the morning recess and by Grades 4-5-6 at the noon recess.
  • Be careful when kicking or batting a ball so everyone is out of the way.
  • Balls should never be bounced or thrown against the building. Once the bell rings all balls should be carried in (no more bouncing or playing) by the person who brought it out.
  • Hands to yourself, no pulling on other children. When playing tag - touch only!
  • A Think About It slip will be given, without warning, if a snowball or rock is thrown.
  • No arguments or failing to obey.
  • Line up quickly and quietly when the bell rings.
  • Winter - Dress for the weather. Boots must be worn if there is snow. We go outside unless the windchill if below 0. If there is mud in the spring, boots are also required.

DISCIPLINE

  • The Bible says that if you honor your parents and teachers, yours will be a long life, full of blessing.
  • We will follow this by not talking back to our teachers and others in charge of us and doing what we are told.
  • We will follow this commandment by not fighting, kicking, or doing things to hurt another person.
  • We will respect the things God has given us by not destroying the property of others and taking care of our own things.

RESPECT: THINK ABOUT IT

  • We encourage our students to show respect for everyone. When students have been disrespectful to another person or school property, they will be given a "Think About It" slip (T.A.I.S.) to explain what they did and how they can do better. This note will be sent home for the parent to read, discuss and sign.
  • Consequences:Think About It Slips
Students who receive 3-5 T.A.I.S. cumulatively will be asked to do a writing assignment suitable for their grade level. If they receive 6-7 T.A.I.S. cumulatively they will lose 1 week of noon recess.
Student receiving 8 or more T.A.I.S. cumulatively - Parents will be asked to come in for a conference, plus the student will lose 1 week of recess.
  • Think About It
A Think About It slip will be given without warning for:
  • Talking back or disobeying an adult supervisor, teacher, or other staff member.
  • Throwing snowballs or rocks.
  • Talking too loudly in the lunchroom.
  • Fighting, kicking, or doing actions that hurt another person.
  • Not keeping hands and feet to ourselves.
  • Not respecting the things God has given us by damaging the property of others or our own things.
